Maintaining Your Budget

Creating your budget is the easy part of the process, sticking to your budget may be a bit more difficult than you have anticipated.  Budgeting is something that you have to work to maintain, it's not something you just put down on paper and forget about, at least not if you want to make it work for you.  You need to make your budget a part of who you are and the way you live, when you do this you will find that thinking and spending in terms of your budget becomes second nature.

Start each week by looking at your expenses and looking at your budget.  Your expenses should not exceed your budget and if they are you need to find areas to cut back.  If you find that you are way under your budget, don't look at this as an excuse to spend more somewhere else.  Instead, keep on this track so that you have emergency funds when you need them or so you can apply more to current debts.

If you are worried that you will not be able to stick to your budget, get a friend or family member involved.  When you make yourself accountable to someone else for your spending you will find that it is a lot easier to stick to.  Have someone that you trust with your financial information help you stay accountable to yourself, your budget, and to them.  Knowing that you will have to answer to someone will often help you stay on track, especially in the early part of working with a budget.

Remember that even the best budget isn't always going to be doable.  Remember that things change and that your budget will need to be flexible.  Some weeks you may need to spend $20 or $50 in groceries because you have family coming into town or your household bills may be more expensive in the summer than they are in the winter.  Look at your budget constantly so you can make changes where you need so that you are always coming out ahead.  Give yourself a break if you bust your budget one week, but use that as an excuse to get back on track the next week.
But how does this all work?

Fact: Your creditors end up subsidizing all or a large part of most debt consolidation services. What you ask? Well before you say this sounds too good to be true, keep in mind that your creditors are not lowering your interest rate and making it easier for you to make smaller payments out of the goodness of their hearts. They realize if they don't help you out a little you may file bankruptcy and they will never recieve a penny of what you owe them!
